His leadership is rooted in lived experience and guided by a simple belief: real leadership means showing up for people, especially when it matters most.

 

Walter understands the strength and challenges of this district because he has stood alongside it for decades, helping communities grow, connect, and thrive.

 

Early Life & Values

Raised in a hardworking family, Walter was taught the values of faith, discipline, and service. Early on, he learned that opportunity is not equally distributed and that progress requires communities working together. Those values have shaped his education, career, and lifelong commitment to service throughout Maryland.

 

A Career Rooted in Community

Walter’s professional career spans corporate and nonprofit leadership, with a focus on mentoring youth, building partnerships, and expanding opportunity for underserved families. His community work has been the foundation of his impact.

 

In Prince George’s County, Walter became a trusted convener, bringing together parents, educators, faith leaders, business owners, seniors, and young people to solve problems collaboratively. He has worked closely with school systems, nonprofits, law enforcement, local government, and small businesses to help build safer, stronger, and more connected communities.

 

His guiding principle is simple:
“If we want change, we must lead it ourselves.”

Why Walter Is Exploring a Path Forward

A message from Walter Kirkland

 

I am exploring a potential run for public office because I believe the people of Maryland’s Fifth District deserve leadership that listens, understands, and stands with them, not above them.

 

For more than 30 years, I’ve worked as a mentor, nonprofit leader, youth advocate, and problem-solver. I’ve listened to parents worried about their children’s safety, encouraged young people to believe in their potential, supported seniors who feel overlooked, and worked with small business owners striving to survive.

 

This exploratory effort is about listening, learning, and determining whether stepping forward is the right next step for our community.

 

If I move forward, my focus will be on:

• Restoring trust between people and government

• Securing long-overdue resources for our district

• Expanding economic opportunity for working families and small businesses

• Investing in young people

• Protecting seniors

• Strengthening public safety through prevention, partnership, and accountability

 

My life’s work has always been rooted in service. This effort is an extension of that commitment, guided by community voices and shared priorities.
