Walter Kirkland Thanks Congressman Steny Hoyer for His Service, Launches Campaign for Maryland’s 5th Congressional District
Prince George’s County, MD — January 8, 2026 — Walter Kirkland today issued a statement thanking Steny Hoyer for his decades of service to Maryland’s 5th Congressional District and announcing the official launch of his campaign for Congress.
“For more than forty years, Congressman Steny Hoyer has served Maryland’s Fifth District with dedication, influence, and a deep commitment to public service,” Kirkland said. “His leadership helped bring stability, resources, and national attention to our communities. That legacy deserves respect and gratitude.”
Kirkland noted that Congressman Hoyer’s decision to step down marks an important transition for the district.
“With Congressman Hoyer closing a historic chapter, our district now has an opportunity to thoughtfully prepare for what comes next,” Kirkland said. “This moment calls for leadership that is steady, rooted in community, and deeply invested in the people who live here.”
Kirkland officially announced the launch of his campaign, emphasizing three core truths that define his candidacy.
First, Kirkland has been a longtime Prince George’s County resident of more than 30 years. “This is home,” he said. “I’ve lived here, worked here, and raised my family here for decades. I understand this community because I am part of it.”
Second, Kirkland is the founder of 100 Black Men of Prince George’s County, where he has spent decades mentoring young people and supporting families. “Long before politics, my work has been about service,” Kirkland said. “Building opportunity, guidance, and accountability for the next generation has been central to my life’s work.”
Third, Kirkland emphasized that he is a father of two sons, which shapes how he views leadership and public service. “When we talk about public safety, mental health, education, and opportunity, these issues are personal to me,” he said. “They affect my children and every family in our district.”
Kirkland stressed that his campaign is grounded in respect for the district’s past and responsibility for its future.
“This campaign is not about tearing anything down,” Kirkland said. “It’s about stewardship — taking care of a community we love and ensuring it’s stronger for the next generation.”
Kirkland concluded by again thanking Congressman Hoyer for his service and reaffirming his commitment to earning the trust of district residents.
“I wish Congressman Hoyer and his family the very best,” he said. “I look forward to listening to the people of Maryland’s Fifth District and working together toward a responsible and hopeful next chapter.”
